Transforming content creation for an international research university

Syde supported the University of Luxembourg in relaunching its web infrastructure by developing a user-friendly platform that improved both user engagement and editorial efficiency.

After 15 years without a significant update, the University of Luxembourg’s web infrastructure could no longer support its ambitions. The university set course for a rebrand to create a more professional and modern online identity, ahead of its 20th anniversary.

As part of a consortium with Ar𝜂s Group and Quattro, Syde was asked to develop a new, flexible publishing platform based on WordPress, empowering the university with the tools it needs to better attract top students from around the world, expose its research to the right audiences, and gain more visibility on an international level.

Syde engineers prepared over 100 custom blocks, patterns and layout sections, empowering editors to create beautiful content according to Quottro’s accessible design system.

The new uni.lu website leverages WordPress multisite and MultilingualPress to power 11 separate sites, each in three languages. Syde engineers have created custom migration tools and dozens of custom editor blocks and patterns to transfer existing information for courses, study programmes and academic profiles into ready-to-use, flexible layouts.

The platform offers advanced controls for user permissions, rich custom editorial features and robust API integrations with internal and external databases. And thanks to a tailored Elasticsearch integration, students and staff can easily discover this information they are looking for, across languages.

Thanks to a custom Elasticsearch integration, searching on uni.lu returns relevant information from all university websites in three different languages.

For the relaunch of uni.lu, Syde has delivered a modern, user-friendly platform that has significantly improved user engagement and editorial efficiency. The new WordPress-based framework facilitates real-time data access and provides centralized control over the website’s content and design. The university has received highly positive feedback, noting the drastic improvement in user experience for both external visitors and internal users.

The URL management is a game-changer for us: Pulling posts from different sites together and filtering them in a user-friendly way avoids double creation of links. Also the very easy creation of redirections in case of need has greatly improved our lives as editors.
