Senior WordPress Engineer (m/f/d) – 100% Remote

  • Office: Remote
  • Schedule: full-time
  • Seniority: experienced
  • Employment Type: permanent

Syde

Are you a seasoned PHP and WordPress engineer who takes ownership, mentors peers, and thrives in a remote, high-autonomy environment? Then you might be exactly who we’re looking for.

Join Syde, the biggest WordPress agency in Europe and a Gold Agency Partner of WordPress VIP. With 105+ employees across 30+ countries, we architect and deliver enterprise-grade solutions for clients like SAP and PayPal, entirely remotely.

As a Senior Web Engineer, you will own the full technical lifecycle of complex features and projects, from architecture and implementation to deployment and performance. You’ll work alongside talented cross-functional teams, guide less experienced engineers, and help raise the bar across everything we build.

Your responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the design and implementation of complex features, plugins, themes, and integrations, from planning to deployment

  • Act as Tech Lead on projects, coordinating development efforts and serving as the go-to technical reference for your team

  • Translate complex client requirements into robust, scalable, and secure technical solutions, proactively identifying risks and edge cases

  • Participate in client meetings and communicate technical concepts, progress, and constraints clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Conduct thorough code reviews and provide actionable, constructive feedback across all seniority levels

  • Contribute to and lead architecture discussions, refactoring initiatives, and strategic technical decisions

  • Develop and maintain CI/CD workflows, automated tests, and observability practices for robust delivery pipelines

  • Drive adherence to engineering standards: code quality, documentation, test coverage, accessibility, performance, and security

  • Mentor and support other engineers through pairing, code reviews, and informal guidance

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, QA, DevOps, Project Managers, and Designers to ensure timely, high-quality project delivery

Must-haves

  • Expert-level proficiency in PHP (5+ years) with deep object-oriented programming mastery — you architect systems and teach principles to others

  • Strong WordPress development expertise: custom plugins, themes, Gutenberg blocks, WP REST API, and complex integrations

  • Real-world Gutenberg / Block Editor experience, including building custom blocks with React

  • Solid JavaScript and React experience, particularly for Block Editor / Gutenberg development

  • Proven ability to mentor other engineers and elevate codebase quality through code reviews and pairing

  • Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (PHPUnit, E2E), and quality standards

  • Confidence working directly with clients, explaining technical decisions and constraints to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Comfort working across the full stack with no strong bias toward client-side or server-side code

  • English at professional working level, this role requires clear, nuanced communication in client and team contexts

  • Timezone compatible with Central European hours (CET/CEST, or at least 4–5 hours of sustainable daily overlap)

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with WooCommerce, WordPress Multisite, or advanced API integrations (REST, SOAP, GraphQL)

  • Familiarity with TypeScript

  • Working knowledge of Docker and cloud-based deployments

  • Experience with performance optimization, caching strategies, and security hardening

  • Knowledge of PSR specifications and modern PHP ecosystem standards

  • Contributions to open source (WordPress core, plugins, packages, or other projects)

  • Experience with JIRA & Confluence in a professional engineering context

  • Previous experience in a remote-first engineering environment
