In this article, we want to introduce Remy van Velthuijsen, our Full Stack Developer. When Remy joined our agency in August 2022, we asked him a few questions to get to know him a little better.
He lives in Breda, The Netherlands.
How would you describe yourself?
I love working with computers. I started to fiddle with computers at an early age, always looking for things I could improve. Whether it was hardware or software, it did not really matter.
This drive still motivates me to keep learning and keep fiddling.
I can be a bit introverted sometimes; even so, I think of myself as a friendly and caring person.
How do you spend your time?
Fiddling with my Homelab, getting into Kubernetes (because that makes total sense for home use), Online sim-racing (mostly endurance-racing), Home-automation, Playing guitar, and DIY home improvement.
What is important to you?
Being able to live my life the way I want is important to me.
Remy’s way to Syde
I finished my vocational education in 2013. The title of that education was “Media Development.” However, I learned most of the skills I have during my internships and jobs afterward.
I have been working with WordPress since my first internship in 2012, and it has helped me build most of my knowledge by allowing me to quickly create actual value for projects.
After working with WP for a while, I also started gaining interest in the hosting side of the business, where I developed some skills.
Syde was interesting to me for a couple of reasons. The first is being a remote company. This idea intrigued me since I was mostly work-from-home for the better part of two years because of the pandemic and liked the freedom it provides.
The second was the nice people I met during my interview and the feeling I got during my talks with the team and Alex.
What do you especially like about your new job?
I like the absolute freedom it provides me to do my job how I like and contribute to the company in a way that suits me.
I am looking forward to many great years at Syde, hopefully working on some cool projects along the way.
Questions to Syder Remy
We asked Remy a few personal questions to learn more about him:
What was the last book you read?
I am still reading both, actually, “When Money Dies Nightmare of the Weimar Collapse” by Adam Fergusson, and “Ultimate Speed Secrets: The Complete Guide to High-Performance and Race Driving” by Ross Bentley.
What do you like most about your city?
It is big enough to have some really nice events but not overcrowded like other big cities in the country.
What is your favorite smartphone app?
It’s pretty evenly split between Twitter and Reddit.
What is the best meal you can cook on your own?
Lasagne, particularly made from scratch.
Sometimes I like to do a variation on the regular one by using slices of salami instead of ground beef and putting some Mozzarella on top.
You get stuck in the elevator for many hours, and there’s a song playing in a continuous loop. What song would that be?
“Tubular Bells” – Mike Oldfield. Mainly due to its runtime, so the number of repetitions is less.
By the way: The Syde Team is 100% remote
This enables us to bring together the best minds in the world in one team. You want to learn more about our way of working and the Syders? Take a look inside Syde!
