Empowering a Global Communications Team with WordPress Multisite and Custom Tools for Seamless Content Creation

Syde partnered with SAP to modernize their global news platform, supporting a new content strategy with an updated design and a future-proof editorial experience. Syde delivered a flexible solution to minimize friction and ensure a successful rollout across SAP’s 40 local and regional news sites.

Syde has been a long-time partner of SAP, providing support and feature development for no fewer than five large-scale WordPress platforms. The partnership began in 2018, when Syde was brought in to drastically improve the performance of news.sap.com. After cleaning up the website architecture and eliminating maintenance overhead by consolidating dozens of themes into a single one, the global SAP News team had a robust foundation for their news platform.

The new setup offered two distinct sets of features with a wide range of customization options. This two-tiered approach enabled small communications teams in emerging markets to present content through an intuitive press room page, whereas larger teams used the ‘News Center’ tier to take full advantage of the versatility of WordPress and engage with their audience through blog posts, feature articles, video content, and podcasts.

After five years, the global news team approached Syde with a plan to restructure the website and implement a redesign focused on three main content categories: press releases, featured stories, and blog articles shared by executive board members. To improve content discovery and simplify editorial workflows, the global team significantly reduced the number of topics and tags used on the site.

The planned redesign was an ideal opportunity to finally make the switch to the feature-rich WordPress block editor. Considering the impact of this change on daily news operations across 35+ sites, SAP’s global team chose an opt-in approach, allowing individual teams to adapt to the system at their own pace. This presented a challenge for our engineers, as it meant that two versions of the same theme would need to be available and maintained in parallel for the duration of the global rollout.

The SAP News design system lets teams easily update page templates to include new content components.

Using SAP’s initial concept brief, Syde designers built a design system to provide the foundation for the development of version 2.0 of the SAP News theme. With the design system in place, our engineers created a component-based architecture for block-based article content and landing page layouts. After learning about key editorial needs in a series of workshops, Syde tailored the editor experience to those needs and to the rules set out by the design system. To minimize distractions, unnecessary options and settings that could lead to design inconsistencies were removed.

For a gradual rollout of the redesign and new block editor features, Syde engineers implemented a sophisticated theme versioning mechanism. This allowed them to iterate on version 2.0 already in production, while simultaneously maintaining the earlier version of the theme for fixes and other necessary updates. This novel split-theme approach created a safe adoption path for individual news centers and press rooms.

Prior to the relaunch, automated testing workflows were introduced to ensure consistent code quality and prevent friction. Syde’s embedded QA specialists ensured that each new component met the acceptance criteria before sending it to the SAP team for a final check. This allowed the team to focus on their day-to-day responsibilities and content preparations.

Thanks to the successful implementation and rollout of the new design, SAP’s global news team has been able to execute their content strategy and further streamline their communication efforts.

By introducing a design system, adopting a block-based approach for news articles, and introducing reusable components for all page layouts, the team can implement new features and brand updates more efficiently across the platform.

The flexibility offered by the theme and WordPress Multisite continues to empower each individual news team on the platform to opt in to the features they need for their market.
